Frequently Asked Questions for Recreational Program Families
Welcome to 5280 Gymnastics! There is a lot to know when you are new to the world of gymnastics and we hope to provide as much information as we can all in one place! Please contact our front desk with any questions you have!
Please plan to arrive at our gym 10 minutes before your class start time!
What to Bring
- Water Bottle: We have water fountains but recommend bringing a water bottle for drink breaks during classes.
- Hair Ties: Please ensure long hair is tightly pulled back with a secure hair tie before your gymnast arrives for class. Gymnasts will be upside down, rolling and flipping so a secure hairstyle is a must!
Dress Code
- Leotards for Girls: Leotards are the standard gymnastics uniform. Leotards provide full freedom for movement without extra baggy clothing getting caught on equipment or slipping through the coach’s hands for spotting skills. Proper gymnastic leotards cover the full torso and do not have skirts attached. Snug shorts or leggings are optional.
Gymnasts must have their midriffs covered at all times.
Having a leotard that covers the gymnast’s midsection allows a safe place for coaches to spot skills without their hands slipping. Covering their midsection also eliminates the potential for injuries to their stomach skin on the bars, beams, trampolines and more. While leotards are the preferred gymnastics dress code, girls may also wear athletic shorts and a snug fit tank or T-shirt that can be tucked in
- Athletic Shorts & T-shirts That Can Be Tucked In For Boys
– Athletic shorts should not have zippers, snaps, buttons or free dangling strings to avoid getting caught up on equipment. Gymnasts spend a lot of time upside down. Tucking in their T-shirt keeps it from flipping up and covering their face when inverted. It also provides a smooth torso so coaches don’t get their hands caught up or slip on the fabric when spotting skills.
- Bare Feet
–
Bare feet provide the safest experience for gymnasts. It allows them to feel the surfaces of different mats and equipment improving their balance and agility. Socks can be a slip hazard on our beams, trampolines, floors and springboards. Shoes damage equipment and can increase the chance for rolling an ankle on our soft surfaces.
- Long Hair Tied Back & No Jewelry – Hair should be tied back to keep it out of the gymnast’s eyes when inverted and rolling or flipping. If you ever forget a hair tie, just ask at the front desk. We keep spares on hand for safety. Jewelry should be removed before entering the gym. This keeps gymnasts from getting injured by jewelry caught on equipment or coaches. We also don’t want you to break or lose your valuables while in class. We do allow stud earrings to be worn.

- If you wish to know what your child should work on to move up, talk to the coach before or after class!
What if my child is interested in competitive gymnastics?
- We recommend any child that is interested in possibly joining one of our competitive teams to enroll in more than one day of recreational classes a week or reach out to your coach about private lessons!
- You can talk to your child’s coach as well and let them know you are interested in the competitive route so they can accommodate you accordingly
- We are proud to have multiple competitive team routes including the Developmental Program, the girls XCEL program and the Boys Club Program.
- The Developmental (DP) Program is the traditional girls team that consists of levels 1-10 and is designed to build a solid foundation and help gymnasts safely advance to the highest level. Lower levels perform the same 'compulsory' routines. Higher levels perform 'optional' routines. This program is great for gymnasts who want to advance to the highest level. Many of our DP gymnasts receive NCAA scholarships! The program is offered at our Wheat Ridge Gym only!
- The XCEL Girls Program is a team designed to offer a broad-based, affordable competitive experience. It is a great program for gymnasts that want more flexibility than the DP program offers or are busy with other sports/activities but still want to compete! The program is offered at our Wheat Ridge and Littleton gyms!
- The Boys Club Program is a team the provides a comprehensive and affordable competitive experience for athletes. This team is perfect for those seeing more flexibility than the DP program or who do other sports and activities but still wish to experience competitive gymnastics! This program is offered at our Littleton gym only!
What is Pre-Team?
- Our Pre-Team programs are invitation only and designed to prepare young athletes to compete on our competitive teams. Classes focus on the importance of developing strength, flexibility, and a strong foundation of basic gymnastics technique that will help them excel in the sport of gymnastics.
